The Management of Federal University Of Otuoke has made the Institution’s ICT Unit a Centre for Information and Communication Technology to ensure that Academic Administrative and Management activities are upgraded digitally for optimal results.
This was disclosed by the newly appointed Director of ICT, Prof Shilgba Karshima Leonard during an interview with FUO Media Team in his office.
Prof. Shilgba revealed that the Conversion of the Unit to a Centre was endorsed during the 23rd Meeting of the Senate on the 28th day of July 2016.
The Director said the Centre now has a mission to ensure that the ICT Centre plays a pivotal role in the Academic Administrative and Management Activities of the University. According to him, the vision is to ensure that the Centre becomes a leading Global University ICT Solutions Provider for learning, Research and Management activities.
Reacting to the question on his activities since his appointment, effective July 1st 2016 as director, he said Meetings have been held and many issues addressed, while others are in the pipeline.
Among issues addressed are, The restructuring of the Centre into Five Major Departments which are Operations Management, Headed by Mr. Okafor Austin Amadi, to handle maintenance and support of hardware, offer application support to users, design and appropriate support and maintenance processes and procedures.
The Web Development and Maintenance Department, Headed by Mr. Iweka Obiajulu, he is to build, develop and maintain Websites belonging to the University, also it is to create and maintain e-mail accounts for the University Community with a mandate to introduce bulk emailing System with Mailing list for different groups in the university.
The Software Applications Development and Training Department Headed by Mr. Williams Ebiwari, is saddled with the task of developing applications that will improve all University processes and procedures, also to design, organize and Co-ordinate training programmes for University Staff, Students and external trainees in certification and professional courses. They are also to provide Instructional Technology services to users especially Lecturers.
They are also to identify and Collaborate with Local and International IT Professional Trainers and Consultants in ways that will be beneficial to the University.
The Information Technology Infrastructure System Installations and Security, jointly headed by Mr. Prince Ngbarabara and Uche Onyegbado is to handle the deployment and maintenance of IT servers, Cabling and Networking, while constantly ensuring that ICT Services are easily accessed in and around the University.
Finally the Finance and Administration Department, headed by Bukuromo Tari Isioma is to handle all financial and administrative matters.
Prof. Shilgba said within a very short time the University will witness changes in the area of Information and Communication Technology.
According to him “ When we put into action our plans, the Internet access will be uninterrupted because we want to get an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that will be cost efficient and properly distribute inverters to all our Server rooms. We also want our students to carry out their registration and documentation online”.
He added that staff of the Centre will be properly trained to enable them be abreast with current trends and practices.
He Concluded by urging members of the Staff and Students to collaborate and support the Centre in its efforts to reposition the University’s Information Communication Technology activities. Also calling on Management to also provide every needed assistance to his Team, because if the team fails, then the University has failed.
