There is ray of hope for thousands of graduates of the university without certificates as the Vice-Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education. Professor Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele has promised to tackle headlong the daunting challenge of non issuance of certificates to graduates of the university since 1998 by the University of Ibadan.

Speaking at the third Senate meeting held at the Postgraduate Hall of the institution, the Vice-Chancellor instructed the Director Senate to compile and make available the names of those yet to be awarded certificates and other necessary documents to enable him use his contacts and other resources available at his disposal to address the issue.

He commended those affected for remaining calm and called on them to exercise patience and to give him time to gather enough information to help solve the problem.

Also at the Senate meeting, seven students who applied for suspension of studies due to ill health and financial constraints from different departments were granted approvals.

The Vice-Chancellor however appealed to Deans, Heads of Department and other lecturers to assist students with good grades but who are financially incapacitated to continue their education, adding that most times when they are allowed to go home, they roam the streets in search of funds and get exposed to crimes and never make it back to the university.

He urged Professors to assume the role of academic leaders of their departments and to lead by example.

Other issues that came up include the affiliation sought to the university by the Pentecostal Theological Seminary Aleto Akpajo Eleme and the Rivers State College of Biblical Studies Asarama in Andoni Local Government Area, to which it was agreed that the programme would be domiciled in the School of Basic Studies while the Department of Religious and Cultural Studies would oversee and regulate their activities.

All second semester results were also approved by the Senate.

A letter of appreciation sent by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the tenth Governing Council, King Aaron Miller Ikuru to the Vice-Chancellor and all who honoured his invitation and graced the Thanksgiving service in respect of his elevation to a first class Chief was read out to members of Senate by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mrs Hope Keaniabarido Kue-Ikoro.

The Senate meeting ended with an agreement by members to nominate and elect two persons who would be part of the Joint Council/ Senate Disciplinary Committee at the next Senate meeting scheduled for Wednesday February 22, 2017.
